CHAKA STICKERS MUSEUM

CHAKA

LOS ANGELES // CALIFORNIA

Chaka is the tag of the legendary Los Angeles graffiti writer Daniel Ramos, an active writer in southern California since the 80’s. In 1990, Chaka was arrested for tagging on a Lincoln Heights traffic light, subsequently pleading guilty to 10 counts of vandalism, and was sentenced to three years probation and 1,560 hours of community service. Authorities in Los Angeles claimed to identify 10,000 unique tags bearing the CHAKA moniker on various surfaces of public and private property — including walls, bridges, freeway signs and lampposts — done primarily with spray paint. The graffiti was said to have caused an estimated 1 million dollars in property damage.

Only 24 hours after being released from jail, he was arrested again for scrawling his name on a courthouse elevator door. Famously, Chaka tags can be seen in the music video for the song "Smells like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, as well as on an episode of the Simpsons. Chaka still resides in Los Angeles. He hosted his first legitimate solo art show in April 2009 and continues to produce art and graffiti, with a recent collab with LA brand Born x Raised.
